18th District Race to be Certified Monday

Official results of the Nassau County Legislature, 18th District race will be announced Monday.

After a long-fought battle, the race for the District 18 seat of the Nassau County Legislature is finally coming to a close.

The Board of Elections told Patch.com Friday that certification of the election results is slated for Monday.

Democratic candidate Delia DeRiggi-Whitton leads Republican opponent Robert Germino. A total of 22 ballots were challenged in court this past week, said Germino.

After the polls closed on Election Day, Germino was ahead by 37 votes. A recount of 500 paper ballots - including absentee, affidavit (hand-written) and emergency - resulted in a 66-vote turnaround for DeRiggi-Whitton, according to LIHerald.com.

Earlier this week, the voting machines were recanvassed to determine a clear winner, said the Board of Elections. A “recanvass” is a manual check of the digitized numbers fed through each electronic machine on Election Day.

The 18th district covers Glen Cove, Sea Cliff, Bayville, Locust Valley, Brookville, Glen Head, Greenvale and Jericho.

Official results for the Glen Cove mayoral race is yet to be determined, according to both candidates. Ralph Suozzi leads Republican challenger Paul Meli by approximately 100 votes.

The Board of Elections could not be reached for comment regarding the mayoral race.

Patch will continue to update this story as more information becomes available.

It looks as though we are on track to take the same amount of time to settle this election as the 2000 presidential election.
