City Council Approves Land Swap, New Golf Fees

Mayor Suozzi: The changes in fees are designed to attract more golfers.

The Glen Cove City Council approved a land swap between the Hempstead Harbor Yacht Club and the city at a public meeting at City Hall Tuesday.

The deal included the exchange of a piece of land on the boat ramp - at the end of Garvies Point - with the city. Another piece of city land, at the entrance of the clubhouse, will go to the yacht club.

Both parcels are under the minimum size for appraisal, according to Mayor Ralph Suozzi, as one contains 518 square feet; the other, 411 square feet.

New Golf Fees Approved

The City Council also motioned to approve new golf fees for the 2012 season, which are designed to increase golf traffic to the 18-hole course, Suozzi said.

The yearly permit for nonresidents will plunge from $875 to $495, which will decrease to $395 after July 4. Permits for nonresidents, Tuesday through Friday, will debut at $275, while 2011's new Tuesday through Thursday twilight fees will be set at $40.

As part of the new rate schedule, resident fees will increase from $75 to $95. Glen Cove residents Phil Govasto and Paul Meli questioned whether the changes would burden the residents' golfing experience.

"Our course has the capacity for a lot more rounds of golf," Suozzi said. "This move will help us compete with nearby courses. We're expecting up to 200 new golfers as a result. The only way to increase revenue at the course is to increase traffic."

Mayor Honors Departing Council Members

Mayor Suozzi awarded citations to Delia DeRiggi-Whitton and Sean Dwyer, who are leaving their City Council seats.

DeRiggi-Whitton will begin her freshman term on the Nassau County Legislature next month; Dwyer lost re-election in the race for City Council.

"I'm humbled to have served the community," Dwyer said. "The city has improved tremendously, and it's been a privilege to have had the opportunity."

Legislator-elect DeRiggi Whitton echoed Dwyer's remarks:

"I'm grateful for my position on the Legislature, but I'll truly miss working with this fine group on the council," she said. "I feel very confident that we did everything with the city's best interest in mind."

Inauguration

The inauguration of 2012's freshmen Councilmen, Reginald Spinello and Anthony Gallo, will be held Monday, Jan. 2, at 2:00 p.m. in the Main Chambers of City Hall. All are welcome to attend.

If people won't come shop or eat in Glen Cove from other towns, then what makes Suozzi think we will find 200 more non residents to buy a golf membership in Glen Cove. He just raised the fee for Glen Cove residents and dropped them for nonresidents. I am switching over to the Nassau County Liesure pass. This guy really doesn't get it.

Way to go boys. GC Golf Course is now (for those of use who have the pleasure of living here) $30 more a round than Beth Page Black. One of the best courses in the country.

How long before we're told that the course is bankrupt and that it's being turned into a new 'super-condo-plex'. You know, like The Avalon, Waterfront, Piazza. If it weren't so sad and predictable it would be funny.

One of the reasons Suozzi's first submitted budget got rejected by the state was because of his unrealistic expectation of the amount of revenue the golf course would bring in. Here is the article.

http://www.antonnews.com/glencoverecordpilot/news/18553-comptrollers-warning-glen-cove-budget.html

• Golf deficit – the comptroller’s office believes that Glen Cove’s golf and recreation fund will end the year with a $100,000 deficit for 2011, creating a total deficit in the fund of $632,000, stating, “The city council should [develop] a self sufficient golf operation… officials did not address this deficit [this year] and have not yet developed a financial plan…”

Apologies, I misread the post as $95/round not season ... which is certainly a relative bargain as compared to BP. That said, a golf course really should be self-sustainable or turned to something that benefits all of the community. I actually love what they did with the playgrounds there (selfish as I have young kids) but I just hope that when it does get turned into something other than a golf course it is sold and not bargained against future & fictitious taxes ... which never seem to come.
