Community Corner

City Ready to Recognize the Seniors

Glen Cove's fourth annual senior citizens celebration set for Saturday.

The Glen Cove community will gather for the fourth consecutive year on Saturday to honor dozens of special residents as the city hosts its Senior Recognition Day. The event will be held in downtown Village Square from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Residents Arthur and Rhoda Finer have been selected as this year's award recipients. The couple, who has lived in Glen Cove for 54 years, has been very active in the community. The two also raised all four of their children in the city.

Rhoda Finer, 81, worked in the Glen Cove Community Development Agency for 20 years and she helped to establish the Interagency Council of Glen Cove. She is also a founding member and current president of the Senior Citizens Advisory Council as well as the Director of the SAGE Foundation, an organization committed to raising funds for the Glen Cove Senior Center.

And this is not the first time Rhoda has been recognized for her volunteerism.

She was previously selected as the Glen Cove Business Improvement District's Person of the Year as well as a Nassau County Trailblazer and she was recently inducted into the Long Island Volunteer Hall of Fame.

It's her love for giving back to the community, she explained, that keeps her so involved.

"I feel that when you live in a community you need to give back," Rhoda said. "You want to be there for others."

Rhoda added that she simply loves the community of Glen Cove.

"It's been our home for almost all of our married life," she said. "It's beautiful and we love the people here because they get involved. Glen Cove is a very heterogeneous community."

Arthur Finer, 88, is a retired graphic artist and continues to use his talents to help local organizations. He has served on the Glen Cove Bicentennial Committee, the Glen Cove Arts Council, The Long Island Singers Society, the Cove Landing Homeowners' Association, the Ethics Commission and many others.

He, too, has a love for helping others and working to make his community the best it can be.

"It's better to give then to receive," Arthur said. "We try to do the best we can and we have tried to teach our kids the same thing."

"A lot of people deserve this honor," Rhoda said. "We feel honored they have chosen us."

Senior Recognition Day is open to all seniors and their families and will feature a host of festivities. There will be many vendors on-hand and the Long Island Senior Pops Orchestra and the Glen Cove Senior Center's Golden Voices Choral Group will provide the musical entertainment.

More than 100 seniors and their families are expected to participate. All proceeds, city officials said, will benefit the Glen Cove Sage Foundation, a not-for-profit organization that enhances services for the senior community.

"I'm very proud that Senior Recognition Day started in my administration," said Mayor Ralph V. Suozzi. "I think it's great that we recognize the contributions seniors have made to our community and our country. Even today in their senior years they contribute so much. Glen Cove is home to so many seniors, both those that have built our community and those that are settling here."

In case of rain, the event will be held in the Wunsch Auditorium at the Robert M. Finley Middle School on Forest Avenue.
