DeRiggi-Whitton Kicks Off Nassau Legislature Campaign
Councilwoman held fundraiser at Page One Restaurant.
Glen Cove City Councilwoman Delia DeRiggi-Whitton held a fundraiser at Page One Restaurant on June 29 to kickoff her County Legislature campaign.
The life-long resident – and daughter of former Glen Cove Mayor Donald DeRiggi – announced that she would run to succeed incumbent Diane Yatauro, D-Glen Cove, on May 23 for 18th Nassau County Legislature District.
“I can’t tell you how grateful I am for your support,” DeRiggi-Whitton told over 80 supporters at the event. “I’m determined to run a strong campaign, but I want to keep it positive, and I need people like you to get involved in this race, stay involved in this race, and share your thoughts about what I can do for our community as our representative in the County Legislature.”
DeRiggi-Whitton is running against former 13th Assembly District candidate Robert Germino, R-Glen Cove.
"My experience in government has taught me that balancing fiscal responsibility with the needs of our communities is no easy task," DeRiggi-Whitton said. "It takes a great deal of time to learn to study budgets, work with personnel and prioritize spending. I am fortunate to have gained this experience first hand during my tenure as a councilwoman."

Delia, stop the spin! Your "fiscal responsibility" is newspeak for "structural deficits" and "one step above junk-bond status."
FACT: Moody's Investors Service rated Glen Cove's credit as "Baa3" on March 22, 2011 (i.e., one step above junk-bond status).
FACT: Since 2009, the New York State Comptroller believed that the Glen Cove City Council cannot afford to “saddle future taxpayers with the additional cost of debt issued to refund prior years' real property taxes.”
FACT: We have a structural deficit of at least $12.8 million (that's the amount the Glen Cove City Council needed to borrow for deficits ending December 31, 2006).
Give the residents of Glen Cove fiscal facts and not financial fantasies!

From the March 22, 2011 report:
"The downgrade to Baa3 reflects the city's distressed financial position, as
demonstrated by a sustained negative operating fund equity position for the
last eight years (2002 through 2009), despite the issuance of deficit
reduction bonds in 2007 and management's efforts to restore balanced
operations...Moody's negative outlook reflects our expectation that the city will remain challenged to rebuild financial reserves after structural operating deficits
over the past nine years."

Germino, I'm a fellow Glen Cove Republican, but I have to say I'm really discouraged at how amateurish your campaign is. Starting a comment war with your opponent on an innocuous article about a fundraiser that happened last month? Seriously, it makes you look petty and weird, like you're stalking her press clippings. Why don't you go out and actually try to convince people to vote for you? I'm one Republican vote you can kiss goodbye after this.

John, I'm sorry the facts bother you.

"John, I'm sorry the facts bother you." Rob Germino, arguing with and demeaning the constituents he hopes to represent! There's a winning strategy for you. By the way, would this be the same Moody's Investment Service that gave AAA ratings to the mortgage-backed securities and CDO's that tanked AIG and forced taxpayers to bail out the financial firms in 2008? Instead of listening to his bond rating story, why don't we ask Rob "Coliseum Tax" Germino why he wants us to bail out billionaire Charles Wang?

Oh please, Patricia, would you rather have Delia "Debt & Deficit" DeRiggi-Whitton in the county? IT HAS ENOUGH PROBLEMS! Glen Cove's finances stink--you can't argue with that!

I like Delia but I heard she is very quit at council meetings.

I'm sorry...I meant "quiet."

"Moody's negative outlook reflects our expectation that the city will remain challenged to rebuild financial reserves after structural operating deficits
over the past nine years." I know Delia didn't do this alone. She seems nice but Glen Cove has a MESS now! Stop voting for the same politicians that say one thing and do another.

Mayor DeRiggi was a strong politician but the apple fell far from the tree. Councilwoman DeRiggi-Whitton tries hard but doesn't seem prepared for the legislature. I need help paying these taxes and have to fork over thousands every year to pay for...what? A bad credit rating? My friend, if I ran my business like the city, I'm out on the street!
@Steve: Delia "Debt & Deficit" DeRiggi-Whitton. LOL!

Being a Republican, I agree with Mr. Germino. Sure he is intense, but someone has to be. DeRiggi Whitton is half of a politician, and is too afraid to voice what she really feels. As a comment said above, she doesn't even speak up at meetings.

Mr. Germino, a word of advice:
I respect and agree with you, but don't be so intense on these things, you're only making yourself look bad. Do some more promoting of your campaign, rather than bashing Delia's.

Decency and good will do not recognize party line boundaries, you have shown to possess them both mrs. Deriggi Whitton, and because of it you have earned my support.

Good for you Mr. Cervasio. It is refreshing to see someone cross party lines and endorse a good friend. While others in this town keep coming after you and calling you a slumlord, Delia DeRiggi-Whitton was the only one on the Glen Cove City Council to stand up for you. As Mayor Ralph Suozzi was on his attack she fought back. As a Committee Person for the Republican Party of Glen Cove you have taken a great risk in endorsing a Democrat. With great risk comes great courage. Good job Mr. Cervasio

"As Mayor Ralph Suozzi was on his attack she fought back." I wonder who she was referring to on her campaign website then: "Preserving our cherished North Shore communities by cracking down on illegal housing and slumlords throughout the district, particularly in Glen Cove. These illegal dwellings are an imposition on all of us, imposing unfair costs on the whole community."

Jim are you nuts, this guy ( Cervasio) just plead guilty to some serious housing violation charges, and now He crossed the line for HER. Something does not smell right here. I know who has my vote this November.

All that I am saying is that people need a place to live. They come to this country with no money and we need landlords that will allow more of them to stay here. Glen Cove has been attacking this guy because he puts more people in to houses than they will allow. Everyone needs a place to live. It is good to see a man stand up for someone who has stood up for him.

Give me a break! DeRiggi-Whitton is just another cheerleader on the council. Who do you think she was referring to on her campaign website?
Jim Carini

Then why did he cross party lines to endorse her? She is not just a cheerleader. She is helping immigrants have a place to live here in Glen Cove. What is wrong with that?

@Jim: So DeRiggi-Whitton supports putting more people into houses than the city will allow but she campaigns against it on her website. Like Will said something does not smell right here.

Go Delia!
"Glen Cove's proposed 2012 budget doesn't address its deficit and includes revenue assumptions that may be overly optimistic, according to a review by state Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli's office.
The review called on the city council to devise a long-range financial plan to eliminate a general fund deficit of $5 million. It also criticized some of the city's borrowing practices."
