Glen Cove Man Arrested on Weapons Charges
Authorities find illegal weapons, ammunition after responding to Ford Street fire
A Glen Cove man was arrested on Thursday after police say they found illegal weapons and ammunition in his burning home.
Frederick Ruffen, a 63-year-old audiologist, was scheduled for arraignment on Friday on felony charges of possessing two assault rifles, six unlicensed pistols and a 50-round magazine. He is also charged with a misdemeanor for having a firearm under legal length. They were among 60 legal weapons responders found early Tuesday in his Ford Street home.
Ruffen, who reportedly does not hold a valid pistol permit, was charged with one count of Criminal Possession of a Weapon, 2nd Degree (a C-felony), three counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon, 3rd Degree (D-felony), and one count of Criminal Possession of a Weapon, 4th Degree (a misdemeanor).
The 5:15 a.m. blaze on Feb. 15, which began in a ground-floor kitchen at 16 Ford Street, does not appear suspicious, officials said. Nassau Red Cross volunteers responded to the scene with funds for food and clothing for the 21-year-old son of the homeowner, said Sam Kille, senior director of PR for the American Red Cross.
