A Nassau County medical technician from Glen Head saved a newborn baby who had stopped breathing Tuesday morning.
Third Precinct Police said that two officers responded to a call about a woman giving birth in Westbury at 9:16 a.m. Tuesday. When they arrived, they found a woman, who was 40 years old, had just delivered a baby boy but he was not breathing and was motionless. The pair, identified as Officers Cooper and Atkin, began providing cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Ambulance medical technician Robert Roper arrived, cut the cord and continued life-saving measures as the baby wa taken to Nassau University Medical Center. En route to the hospital, the baby began to cry and breathe on his own.
Another ambulance took the mother to the hospital, where she was listed in satisfactory condition. The baby was listed as stable. A Third Precinct supervisor, identified as Sgt. Hughes, assisted in escorting the ambulance safely to the hospital.
The mother is listed in satisfactory condition and the child as stable.
