Jack's Shack Back in Business

Code violation shut down new restaurant.

Jack's Shack, which had its grand opening less than a month ago but then was shut down, is back in business as of 11 a.m. Friday.

The Glen Head restaurant, which offers a menu of organic ingredients and hormone-free meat, fish and poultry, opened Jan. 20. But a Town of Oyster Bay spokeswoman said the restaurant had violated its approved site plan.

"The originally submitted site plan had a certain amount seating, maybe 20 seats, and 7 or 8 parking spaces," in the center it shares with other stores, Phyllis Barry said, explaining that the parking spaces must be allocated according to the restaurant's customer volume.

"Without any warning, they decided to expand seating, which took more parking," she said. "When we heard, we closed them down. They had to go back and make alterations."

The store was cleared to reopen Wednesday, the town said. A store manager declined to comment on the closing but said he was pleased to be back in business.

Its grand opening in January drew the Chamber of Commerce, Glen Cove Mayor Ralph Suozzi, and Assemblyman Charles Lavine and Legislator Delia DeRiggi-Whitton.

This story has been updated to clarify the grand opening date of the restaurant.

Was it really necessary to shut them down? It's not like they found bugs in the food. This is a new business, that has great food, that was looking to maximize it's profiles. It's no wonder this part of Long Island is filled with vacant buildings, fast food joints and $.99 stores. Aren't there more important things to do like lock up kids wandering the halls without their hall-pass?

Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy! This restaurant owner has violated more than just a seating plan!! How about the 5.5 million dollar class action labor lawsuit for failure to pay overtime & taking tip money from employees that is going to trial and he is about to lose! Do some research on this guy William Degel & you will see for yourself! Google him . . . you'll have a good laugh!

James. It opened Jan. 20 and was closed down the Town of Oyster Bay shortly thereafter. It reopened today according to the manager; it was cleared by the town to reopen two days ago, according to the town.

James is correct, I ate there in 2011 and there was a Newsday review on November 8, 2011.

It's grand opening was Jan.20. It was closed down by the Town of Oyster Bay shortly thereafter and it reopened today.

We have be eating the right along. The glen cove chamber might have had a grand opening (which I can't figure out why glen cove was involved instead of our own chamber) but he has definitely been open for business.

Yes, open but then closed. That's the point of the story--that the town shut it down and now it's reopened. Thanks for clarifying that it actually opened earlier since the announcement of the grand opening and the story about it didn't mention that it had already opened. But our main interest in today's story was that it was shut down and then reopened. I believe Glen Cove's chamber was involved because the restaurant joined that chamber.

Just admit the story is not factually correct and move on. The story sounds like he opened up and was immediately shut down. That is simply not true and I've been eating there for months. I'm sure a new business owner would appreciate that you correct the mistake

It's been open since october

Your first sentence dramatizes the untrue statement that he opened and was immediately shut down. Fix it please

I read the article and it all made sense. The business was opened and then shut down due to seating and parking changes. Its reopened and operating. Seemed pretty clear and to the point. I have not eaten there but seems worth a try!

What don't people understand? The article is clear to me. The Shack is pretty good. Uncle Jacks in Bayside is the best steakhouse by far.

I realize there needs to be order and some codes that need to be followed, but it seems a little extreme and maybe even self destructive for government bureaucracies to be closing down businesses when they decide to open in the area. Every empty store we see is lost productivity, tax revenue and jobs. Let's make some more empty stores.

It is NOT an accusation, and thank you for reassuring me that freedom of speech is not permitted on the "patch" once again, which in itself is criminal. And having more knowledge on the articles you are writing would also be appropriate. Have a nice day, I'm done on here.

Get your own website, blog or whatever if you want free speech. Try writing a letter to the editor of any paper (Whoops, they edit letters or not even publish them) or post on their web pages (Whoops again, they edit comments on their website and even delete them too).

David she should be able to say whatever she wants. Obviously nothing threatening or lewd. Let the readers decide if they agree or not.

No, James, you're flat-out wrong. You see the name next to the masthead at the top of the page? THAT's who decides what's acceptable here. No one has any right to say what they want on someone else's forum; it's a privilege.

And another thing: I would strongly suggest that several posters here take some remedial reading lessons because there is nothing in this article that's factually incorrect.

Welcome back and best of luck to Jack's Shack.

From what I heard Jack Shack had a few warnings before the town just came in and closed down and he ignored the warnings. I was there today and had a wonderful lunch. A business like this is welcomed to me in this town where there is not very much so its nice to have something different. I saw he had a petition for residents to sign so he can get more seating and outdoor seating too.

As for parking I don't know why its such a big deal. I live a block from town. Glen Head has a big parking lot. And many people walk to the town. There is plenty of parking near the town too. If TOB doesn't think there is enough parking instead of building a park on the corner where sunco was maybe they should consider another parking lot.
