Liverpool Shuffle to Channel The Beatles

Four-piece band to perform at Glen Cove's Downtown Sounds concert on Friday.

If by some sort of celestial magic, The Beatles were somehow reconstituted and sent out to tour Long Island, they would find that they were traveling in the dust of The Liverpool Shuffle, who had already played their music all over Long Island.

This Island-based incarnation of the Fab Four has played the length and breadth of the island since the group was founded in 2003, and will bring their act to Friday's Downtown Sounds concert at the Glen Cove's Village Square.

"It's been a great challenge to try and present this music in an authentic and recognizable way, to capture the sound, the energy and the enthusiasm that The Beatles brought to their music," said Joe Refano, the group's founder.

Aside from vocals and playing guitar in The Liverpool Shuffle, Refano is a writer-composer, producer and performer of award-winning radio and TV commercials and jingles as well as all manner of music and sound production, working out of his studio in Centerport.

After seeing The Beatles' movie, "Help!" in the mid '60s, bassist Mike Green decided that a career in music was his calling.

"It's safe to say that [The Beatles] have been a major influence on me since those early days," Green said.

Guitarist Mike Ponella boasts an encyclopedic knowledge of John Lennon's quips and one-liners and his impersonation of Lennon's speaking voice is dead on, so much so that he was the Lennon stand-in during the early days of the Broadway show, "Beatlemania."

Drummer Peter Bross is known for his tight and accurate rhythms that draw comparisons to the playing of Ringo Starr. Considered as the ensemble's "secret weapon," Bross is also a fine vocalist making it possible at Liverpool Shuffle shows to take the music places where the Beatles themselves didn't go.

Whether you are a fan of "She Loves You" or "I Want To Hold Your Hand," from the early albums; "Things We Said Today" or "Day Tripper," from the midterm vinyls; , or  the innovative music of "Magical Mystery Tour" or "Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band," The Liverpool Shuffle will take you back to the days of the "British Invasion," that transformed the music on this side of the Atlantic, beginning in the mid '60s.

The free concerts will be held every Friday between Glen and Bridge streets at 7:30 p.m. until Aug. 27. Attendees are encouraged to bring a lawn chair and there will be free parking in the nearby municipal garages.

Visitors can also take advantage of the $15 Music Box Special, a fixed price dinner program being offered by a number of local restaurants as part of their participation in the concert series. Choices include entrées that range from chicken wraps to chicken parmesan, shrimp tempura to monster ribs.
