Local Electric Company Pleads Guilty to Stiffing Workers
Nassau County District Attorney: Locust Valley-based company agrees to pay back six employees nearly $150,000 in wages for work performed on various area maintenance projects.
Anker’s Electric Service, Inc. of Locust Valley pleaded guilty to charges of underpaying its workers Thursday, according to Nassau County District Attorney's office.
The local electrical company was charged with a misdemeanor for failing to pay wages to employees. The plea included compensation of $149,557 and an additional $16,000 in fines.
Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice said that between 2008 and 2011, the company underpaid six of their employees by as much as $17 an hour for performing work on various area maintenance and repair projects.
This included contracts with the Town of North Hempstead, Garden City and on the installation of new outdoor lighting stanchions at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow, Nickerson Beach Park in Lido Beach and Wantagh Park, stated the release.
Under Article 8 of the Labor Law, Anker’s Electric was required to pay workers “in accordance with the prevailing wage rate of pay,” according to Rice, as these were considered public works projects.
“When businesses cheat their employees out of hard-earned wages, my office’s Labor Unit will be there to ensure that those businesses are held accountable and that workers receive their fair share,” said Rice.
Anker’s Electric Service's attorney Bob Schalk told Patch.com there was no intentional wrongdoing from his client: "It was a clerical error. All employees have been compensated."
