Crowds of residents packed the streets of downtown Glen Cove Sunday for the sixth annual Children's Halloween Costume Parade, hosted by Glen Cove Downtown Business Improvement District (B.I.D.). Innovative costumes and screams of laughter filled the entire area as children trick-or-treated to participating downtown businesses. Roads were blocked off during the two-hour-long event, which stretched from School Street, passed through Glen Street and ended on Pulaski. M.Y. Wellness Studio hosted their first Kids Yoga Playdate event on Saturday, Oct. 1. Glen Cove children ages 3-5 had an afternoon filled with relaxing fun. Yoga instructor Katie Baiata taught Cole, Natalie and Naveen how to properly do various yoga moves. The kids also played games, listened to music and enjoyed light refreshments. The annual Mayor's Snapper Derby at Pryibil Beach Fishing Pier was the place to be Saturday, as Glen Cove families used their best fishing skills to compete for top honors and prizes. The snappers were plentiful with over 120 fish reeled in. Although the event was rescheduled due to Tropical Storm Irene, it did not deter Glen Cove residents from attending. There were 85 registered kids, with ages ranging from 6-10 in the Junior Division, and 11-16 in the Senior Division. Fishing began at 1 p.m., and ended at 3 p.m. Raffles and refreshments followed. Mayor Ralph Suozzi and the City of Glen Cove hosted the 9/11 Tenth Anniversary Commemoration at Morgan Park Sunday. Hundreds brought chairs, blankets and loved ones to the memorial, where streets were dedicated to the four residents who lost their lives in the attacks.
It was a soggy first day, as Glen Cove School District welcomed back students Tuesday. Kindergarten through second grade students at Deasy and Gribbin Schools took part in several activities designed to get to know their teachers, "break the ice" with new classmates and prepare them for the new school year, according to a news release. One class of Connolly students were introduced to the class pet, while children at Landing were busy sharpening pencils. On Aug. 30 - two days after Tropical Storm Irene hit Glen Cove - the cast, crew, and over 200 extras filled Morgan Park to film a concert scene to be used in an upcoming episode of the USA Network hit series, Royal Pains. The show, which is based in the Hamptons, follows Hank Lawson (Mark Fuerstein) who is the “doctor on demand” and becomes the new concierge doctor to the rich and famous. Numerous takes and scenes were filmed from different angles throughout the day under the leadership of Michael Watkins, the director of Royal Pains.
It was a storm like no other. The threat of a hurricane sent Long Islanders scrambling for supplies and to secure property. Then the fear of flooding forced some to evacuate. While the summer brings a wide array of events to Glen Cove, Tuesday night marked the one day a year where residents are officially invited to get better aquainted with local law enforcement in a block party-style fashion. The Fifth Annual National Night Out Against Crime set up shop outside of the Glen Cove Police Department from 6-9 p.m. The night kicked off with live music, food, refreshments, and an introduction from the GCPD. The Annual Feast of St. Rocco returned to Glen Cove this week. With the combined efforts of over 300 parishioners, the event includes live entertainment, rides, games, raffles, religious masses, and food and more food. The feast began Tuesday and runs through July 31.
Glen Cove families came together at Morgan Park on Saturday for the Fourth Annual Family Awareness Day. The event – which was hosted by SAFE Inc.’s PRIDE Coalition (Substance Abuse Free Environment) – featured free music, games, popcorn, snow cones, cotton candy and hot dogs, as well as carnival games, face painting and an inflatable Candy House. SAFE Inc., Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club and representatives from the After 3 Program were on hand with information on community programs for children. The day concluded with raffle prizes of "Family Fun Packs."
St. Patrick's Msgr. McCann Parish Hall was filled to capacity with well wishers honoring departing priests Fr. Thomas Costa, Fr. Martin Klein and Fr. Rolando Ticllasuca after 11:45 May 29 mass. Three priest from the Augustinian Canons near Vienna will serve both Saint Patrick's Church and St. Rocco's Church. Father Thom will become Pastor of Our Lady of Mercy in Hicksville, and Father Marty will join him as a semi-retired priest. Father Rolando will serve at Our Lady of The Assumption Parish in Copiague. The priests last day at St. Patrick's will be June 22.
Glen Cove High School students celebrated senior prom on Thursday night at the New Hyde Park Inn. Senior Kimberly Farfan attended the prom with her fellow students: "Prom was a lot of fun," she said.
