Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club 1st Annual Club Closet SHOPPING SPREE! Smashing Success

Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club First Annual Club Closet Shopping Spree, held on Friday, September 27 and Saturday, September 28 beat expectations, making this year’s event a smashing success.

The Club originally planned on holding the Shopping Spree clothing sale in half the Club’s gymnasium space, however, the generous donations of clothing, shoes and accessories from the community poured in, compelling the Club to use the entire gym space to house the stock and hold the sale.  Shopping Spree chair, Betsy Gibbs, owner of Worth Repeating in Locust Valley, along with GCBGC Executive Director, Melissa Rhodes and a handful of volunteers turned the gymnasium into what looked like a high end boutique with clothing, shoes and accessories, all color coordinated and neatly displayed on racks and tables making it easy for customers to quickly scout unique pieces that fit their style simply by gravitating towards the color of their choice.  The Shopping Spree offered a variety of clothing from moderate separates and dresses to high end designers including Armani, Carolina Herrera and Yves St. Laurent.  Also available were custom made one of a kind dresses.  Shoppers came from all over Long Island with many returning for a second shopping spree to find more bargains.

The Club is paying forward the generosity of the community by donating un-purchased items to other not-for-profit organizations.  Suits were donated to the Junior League of Long Island for their First Step Event providing business attire for women re-entering the workforce.  Donations also went to St. Patrick’s Church in Glen Cove, the First Presbyterian Church, also in Glen Cove, the Hempstead Boys & Girls Club, Big Brothers and Big Sisters and the South Hempstead Baptist Church.  Additional outreach included clothing donation to a family in Hempstead whose house had recently burned down.  “I’m so glad that we had this occasion to help out other organizations that can also benefit from the kind donations our community made to us.  We are blessed to have a community that supports us in so many ways and also be in a position of helping others,” said GCBGC Executive Director, Melissa Rhodes.
