Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club April Youth of the Month

Katie Arevalo and Juan Carlos Molina have been named the Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club Youth of the Month for April.

Katie, a fourth grader at Connolly Elementary School, is nine years old and has been a Club member for three years.  Her favorite subjects are math and science but she has a true flair for the arts.  Katie enjoys participating in the Club’s Art programs where she is able to apply both math and science to her artistic creations.  “I love being at the Club.  I get to learn new things here, things I wouldn’t learn if I were at home.  Sometimes I struggle with my homework and my group leader, Dah-keem Williams is always there to help me.  I really feel comfortable at the Club where I can be myself,” said Katie.  Katie is also a singer.  She sings in the children’s choir at her Church and aspires to be a singer when she grows up.

Juan, 13, is a seventh grader at Robert M. Finley Middle School.  A member for one year now, Juan originally joined the Club because his friends were members and spoke highly of the programs and their experiences. While friendship may have been his original motivation for joining the Club, Juan has in the past year discovered so much more.  “I really enjoy participating in the sports programs and getting involved in the teen activities,” said Juan, who recently volunteered with his Club peers in the city of Glen Cove’s E-Waste recycling efforts.  “I also like the fact that we help each other with our homework,” he added.  Juan’s favorite subject is science and he is quite a determined young man.  In addition to school, the Club, sports activities and religion classes, Juan works with his father on construction projects during the weekends and helps his uncle, who is a mechanic, fix cars.  He plans on attending college and hopes to pursue a career in the automotive industry when he grows up.
