Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club January 2014 Youth of the Month

English physicist and mathematician, Sir Isaac Newton said, “If I have been able to see further, it was only because I stood on the shoulders of giants."  Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club Youth of the Month, Kyle Nitzsche and Lilly Knobel, who both also have an affinity for math, believe they too can see a little further because of the Club leaders and mentors who persuade them to try a little harder every day.

Kyle, who is 14, in the 8th grade at Robert M. Finley Middle School and has been a member for seven months, credits the Club for many positive influences but the greatest influence has been in the area of education.  “I didn’t always do my homework and I would fall behind, but Ms. Antoinette (Edmonston, Teen Director) really encouraged me to do my homework.  Now I always make homework a priority and math and science have become my favorite subjects,” said Kyle.  In addition to improving his homework skills, Kyle praises the Club for helping to improve his social skills and becoming more physically active.  “I used to stay home and watch television but since coming to the Club, I have joined a basketball team and am participating in more activities.  I’m socializing with friends more and I am becoming more mature.”  Kyle, who has been disassembling and reassembling computers since the age of 10, would like to pursue a career in computer security.

11-year old Lily Knobel, a fifth grader at Connolly Elementary School, would like to become a teacher when she grows up, a career interest sparked by some very special mentors who have inspired her.  “Math can be difficult for me but Mr. Jacubb (Coleman, Group Leader) always helps me and because of his help, I feel more confident when I am working on my math homework.  Miss. Allison (Kaiser, Education Coordinator) is also really helpful.”  Lily has been a member of the Club for a year and a half during which time she has made many friends and likes participating in various Club programs and sports activities.  “Mr. John (Andree, Sports & Fitness Coordinator) encourages me to get involved in sports like soccer and basketball, and because of him, I have more endurance.”   Lily also enjoys getting involved in the numerous art projects offered by Mr. Sean (O’ Callaghan, Arts Coordinator).
