Glen Cove Celebrates Independence Day

Mayor Ralph V. Suozzi and the Glen Cove City Council were pleased to host another wonderful Independence Day celebration in Glen Cove again this year. The July 4th festivities began with the annual Children’s Bicycle Parade through our flag lined Downtown. With bikes, wagons and scooters proudly decorated in red, white and blue and accompanied by the music of DJ John Yee, over 200 youngsters and their families rode from the Finley Middle School to Village Square, where they enjoyed cookies and lemonade generously provided by the Glen Cove Youth Bureau and ices donated by Ralph’s Ices.  A special thank you to Glen Cove Car Wash for donating balloons for all the participants.  The children eagerly crowded the stage to join talented soloist, Sarina Koli, along with Mayor Suozzi and the City Council in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and singing the National Anthem along with a variety traditional Patriotic tunes. The inspiration for the bicycle parade originally came from residents Cheryl Carmody and Patty Pilla 21 years ago. Many thanks go to the Glen Cove Youth Bureau for continuing the tradition and making this event a permanent part of our community’s July 4th celebrations.

The celebration continued into the afternoon as families and friends joined Mayor Suozzi at Morgan Memorial Park for a ceremonial ribbon cutting and rededication of the newly restored Gazebo. The Mayor presented Emma Rose and Austin Kasyjanski of Bedford, New Hampshire, citations for their generous contribution of $25, which they collected and presented to him the day after the gazebo collapsed, while in Glen Cove visiting their grandmother, Carol Kasyjanski.. Mayor Suozzi also presented Citations to long time Glen Covers Les Stanco for his countless hours as the general contractor for the re-construction and James O’Grady for his vision and dedication to re-building the gazebo to its original dimensions and details.  The Mayor thanked everyone, from near and far, who contributed and helped with restoring the beautiful and iconic gazebo to its rightful place in Morgan Memorial Park.  The Mayor then cut the ribbon and Ian Petillo and the Legacy Jazz Band, who were the last performers’ to play prior to the collapse, to be the first performers for the first concert in the newly restored gazebo.  The music continued into the evening when everyone was treated to the beautiful music of the Northwinds Symphonic Band, under the direction of East Island resident, Helen Bauer.  Mayor Suozzi joined in with his trumpet for the playing of the National Anthem and after a wonderful evening of music the crowd of approximately 3,000 enjoyed a spectacular fireworks display by Grucci beginning at 9:15.

Special thanks to all of the fireworks sponsors for providing us with another very special celebration of our nation’s birth.  Thanks also to our Parks & Recreations Department, Harbor Patrol, Police Department, Fire Department, Auxiliary Police, Emergency Medical Service Personnel, City of Glen Cove Building and Maintenance and North Shore Golf Cart.
