North Shore 8th Grade Girls' Lacrosse Teams' Breakout Season

The North Shore 8th Grade girls’ lacrosse teams’ breakout season came to a sudden end this past Sunday at with a disappointing 7-6 playoff loss versus top rival Manhasset. The team earned a top seed after a stellar season which included wins against the defending champions Cold Spring Harbor as well as top lacrosse power West Islip and the same Manhasset team. The game itself remained tight throughout and the teams kept the relatively large and boisterous crowd on the edge of their seats. North Shore surged just before the half with crucial draw controls and three consecutive goals by Maddy Podaras and Alana Greene to secure a 5-3 lead at the break. As the game ensued the somewhat petite Patty Camarano came up huge with several key stops between the pipes. At the 16 minute mark Corinne Heffernan finished off a highlight real play with a back door goal courtesy of a quick pass from April Rowell. To their credit, Manhasset battled back as they slowly chipped away at the North Shore lead pulling within one marker with only 6 minutes remaining in the stanza. The superb play down the stretch of the Manhasset net minder kept hope alive for the orange and blue. With the score dead locked at 6 Manhasset controlled the ball and utilized its final time out in hopes of creating one final shot. The tough North Shore defense anchored by Eileen Quinn and Nikki Nannis forced the ball to the turf. The fight for the loose ball resulted in a throw which was controlled by Manhasset. Again, the relentless North Shore's Defense dislodged the ball from its opponent creating yet another mad scramble. On this day it was not to be as the late game heroics belonged to the girls from Manhasset. This final loose ball had ideas of its own as it made its way to a Manhasset cross. The Manhasset girls moved to ball well and adeptly located an open teammate who picked up the tally with just 23 ticks left in regulation. One final North Shore draw control and one final offensive assault by Hannah Moran of North Shore fell short.
It was not be on this day. Manhasset moves on to play Cold Spring Harbor in the final.
