DEC 'Partially' Lifts Shellfish Ban in Oyster Bay Waters

Seafood enthusiasts can start eating shellfish from parts of Oyster Bay beginning Thursday.

Effective sunrise on Thursday, the closure that began on May 23 will be partially rescinded, according to the Department of Environmental Conservation.

As posted on the Town of Oyster Bay website, shellfishing will be permitted in all of the normally certified shellfish lands in Oyster Bay Harbor west of a line extending south from the southwestern-most point of Brick Yard Point (Centre Island) to the landward end of the rock jetty located approximately 100 feet easterly of the boat launching ramps in the Town of Oyster Bay’s Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park.

The initial ban was triggered after partially treated sewage was from the Oyster Bay Sewer District was accidentally released.
