Glen Cove Celebrates Sixth Annual Blessing of the Creche

St. Patrick's clergy joined in Christmas carols, as they blessed the Nativity scene in the Village Square on Friday night.

The official blessing of the creche in the Village Square attracted a big turnout Friday night.

As a light snowfall set a festive atmosphere, the young voices of the St. Patrick's Children's Choir led the crowd in carols and parochial hymns, including "O Come All Ye Faithful," and "Soon and Very Soon."

Sgt. Jack McDougal of  had the honor of welcoming everybody to the sixth annual event.

"Tonight we continue a tradition that started six Christmases ago," said McDougal. "To come together for one evening, putting aside our commitments, parties, and shopping to remember the reason for the holiday season."

A version of "Silent Night–" sung in alternation between the English and Spanish languages–began as Father Thom, Father Marty, and Father Rolando of St. Patrick's Church led the blessing of the creche.

Sgt. McDougal also made sure to thank the many people who made the evening possible: "First I'd like to thank Michael Puntillo Jr. for allowing us to put the creche on the property," said McDougal. "Also, to Fran Howlett and the children's choir of St. Patrick's. Jeannine of Page One supplied the hot chocolate along with Peter and Liz of GLY, who've invited everyone down to the warmth of their cafe to enjoy the hot chocolate and cookies."
