Glen Cove EMS Walks in 9/11 Memorial

Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers trek honors off-duty firefighter who ran through the Brooklyn tunnel and lost his life trying to save others.

Four Glen Cove EMS members were among more than 30,000 who participated in a yearly charity event Sept. 30 retracing the route of a first responder who died Sept. 11 after he raced to the Twin Towers when the planes hit.

Stephen Siller, 34, had just finished his shift with Squad 1 in Park Slope, Brooklyn when he heard the call and was compelled to gear up and run through the Brooklyn Tunnel toward the burning World Trade Center.

EMT's Didi Yep and Elizabeth Petrucci, Lieutenant Andrew Carpenter and critical care EMT Paul Silva participated in the 5k event, which drew a crowd of firefighters, EMT's, paramedics, police officers and active military personnel from across the country, as well as many civilians.

"Sending a Glen Cove team to support the charity event was important because the City of Glen Cove including Glen Cove EMS actively participated in the rescue and evacuation operations on Sept 11th 2001," said chief Matt Venturino.

The team raised $600 in donations toward a total of $1.2 million raised, Venturino said.
