A senior North Shore-LIJ doctor has been selected to replace George Dunn as Glen Cove Hospital's medical director, the hospital announced last week.
Barbara Barnett had previously served as associate chair of the department of medicine, director of clinical affairs and section head of hospitalist medicine at LIJ Medical Center in New Hyde Park.
Dunn retired at the beginning of the year after 35 years at Glen Cove Hospital.
In her new role, Barnett oversees medical affairs, quality management, patient care and safety issues and standards of care at the hospital.
Barnett has served as a member of several hospital committees since she joined the LIJ Health System in 1997. She served as medical director for two projects aimed at improving care for patients with pneumonia and sepsis, and as physician co-chair of a committee that was formed to focus on high-quality patient and family-centered care.
In addition to her leadership roles in the hospital network, Barnett teaches at Hofstra University's North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine as an associate professor in the departments of medicine and emergency medicine.
She is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, a Fellow of Academic Emergency Medicine and a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians. She has been published in several peer-reviewed journals and has served as an editor and contributor to medical textbooks.
Barnett received her medical degree from SUNY Health Science Center at Brooklyn. She completed her residency in emergency medicine/internal medicine at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and at LIJ Medical Center. She is currently enrolled in the Dartmouth HealthCare Delivery Sciences Master’s Program.
