Holocaust Center Welcomes New Board Members

The Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County’s (HMTC) recently welcomed Martin Elias and Terence E. Smolev to its Board of Directors.

“The Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center is greatly honored to have Mr. Elias and Mr. Smolev join our organization’s Board of Directors,” said Steven Markowitz, Chairman of HMTC’s Board. “These new members bring a wealth of leadership and experience and will be influential in helping continue our work to teach the history of the Holocaust and its lessons through education and community outreach.”

Martin Elias is the President of Elias Properties Management Inc., a real estate investment company located in Jericho, NY.  The company owns and manages retail shopping centers.  A foundation was founded by Martin’s parents, now named the Ike, Molly & Steven Elias Foundation. One of the leading philanthropists on Long Island, Martin funds the Foundation which makes charitable contributions to a host of worthwhile causes.  He has been heavily involved with HMTC for several years and has been the inspiration for and major supporter of programs promoting the mission of the Center.

Terence E. Smolev recently founded The Law Offices of Terence E. Smolev, P.C., located in Jericho, New York. Previously, he was a partner at Forchelli, Curto, Deegan, Schwartz, Mineo & Terrana, LLP.  Mr. Smolev began his legal career at the international accounting firm of Peat Marwick Mitchell & Co (now KPMG).  Currently, he lectures on Criminal Tax Fraud at the Washington College of Law of American University. He has also been an adjunct professor at Hofstra University Schools of Business and Law, where he taught accounting, business law, tax law, and estate planning.


Mr. Smolev is a member of the New York City Police Museum Board of Trustees and serves as Vice President-Counsel and Trustee on its Executive Board. He served as member of the Long Island Cabinet for Israeli Bonds, and on the Nassau County Comptroller's Audit Advisory Committee. He currently serves on the North Shore-LIJ Health System Foundation Professional Advisor's Committee, the Long Island Community Foundation's Professional Advisory Committee and is a Board member of the Gurwin Jewish Geriatric Foundation and is the Vice-Chair of the Board of Directors of the Alzheimer's Foundation of America. He is a past President of the Pickett Farm Homeowners Association and for 14 years served on the Hofstra University Board of Trustees
