Kitten Adoption Drive Begins

Glen Cove Animal Lovers League partnering with grad students to address springtime kitten boom.

As spring arrives, myriad animals and plants experience the miracle of new life cycles. That includes cats, but society's affinity for feline friends has resulted in a population so large that shelters get inundated with kittens too numerous to find enough loving homes for all.

The solution is often euthanasia. Killing kittens may seem a cruel answer, but for organizations overwhelmed by numbers, resources are few and alternatives aren't many.

This year, a group of NYIT graduate students came forward to work with the Glen Cove Animal Lovers League to start a kitten adoption and donation drive. Donation bins will be available at the Glen Cove Animal Shelter and Petco. Requested items include KMR Kitten Formula, kitten food, bottles, socks, blankets and towels to cover the animals' care at the shelter.

The drive will last through "kitten season," April and May, as the students attempt to find loving homes for the newborns.

“It really gives me such a warm feeling to see a group of highly motivated students come to the shelter and ask what they could do to help. I was so impressed to arrive at Glen Cove Petco and see the beautiful sign and flyers, and a table already filled with much-needed donations,” said Joan Phillips, director of the Animal Lovers League.

All cats and kittens are spayed or neutered, vaccinated and examined by a veterinarian before they are adopted.

The shelter invited potential volunteers ages 14 and older to assist with the "various procedures and nurturing of the new babies."
