'Night on The Town' Fundraiser in Mineola Remembers Plainview Resident

The charity cuisine event to support Leukemia & Lymphoma Society at Jericho Terrace on May 7.

Pasquale Lubrano, a Plainview resident, emigrated from Italy to the United States in 1957, he was seeking the American dream.

He realized his dream in 1980 when he opened La Bussola Ristorante, a restaurant in Glen Cove. As business grew, he opened additional locations in Huntington and Mineola, and his four sons joined the family restaurant chain.

But in 1991, Lubrano was diagnosed with leukemia. While some doctors only gave him a year and a half to live, experimental treatments allowed him to live 14 years longer and experience being a grandfather eight times.

Now, helping to remember Pasquale Lubrano, his son Tony Lubrano, proprietor of Piccola Bussola restaurant in Mineola and a member of the philanthropic group, United Mavericks, along with another member Harry Zapiti, helped orchestrate a charity cuisine event to directly benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society called “Night on the Town in Mineola.”

On Wednesday, May 7, from 7-11 p.m. at The Jericho Terrace in Mineola, two dozen restaurants will provide samples of their finest cuisine for guests to enjoy. The evening will also feature a performance by Donna Vivino, formerly of the Broadway production Wicked, as well as the sounds of a 23-piece orchestra.

“We expect nearly a thousand guests to attend our Night on the Town,” said Tony Lubrano

“It is awe-inspiring to witness the vast participation by area restaurants and the individuals who will take the time to contribute and partake in an event that will help those suffering from the devastating illnesses of leukemia and lymphoma," he added. "My father would be humbled by this outpouring of love and support.”

Other highlights of the event will include the presentation of the Pasquale Lubrano Community Service Award to both Senator Jack M. Martins and local accountant Michael Costa, in honor of Lubrano’s memory, as well as forms of recognition for two World War II veterans, each of whom had been awarded two Purple Hearts after the Battle of Normandy.

“The United Mavericks consist of a great group of friends with a common goal, to help others,” said Nicholas Valastro, United Mavericks founder.

“Events like this one will not only support an important cause, but it will also allow us to raise awareness and increase participation in additional charitable events in the future, including the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers 5K Run to remember those who died on 9/11,” he added.

The United Mavericks discounted 100 “Night on the Town in Mineola” tickets to senior citizens of the local Golden Age Club and Leisure Club. The cost of a ticket is $100 per person. Tickets can be purchased online, or call Harry Zapiti at 516-426-1652 or Tony Lubrano at 516-316-9271.
