Patch Picks: Memorial Day in Glen Cove

This Memorial Day celebrate at one of Glen Cove's many events.

This Memorial Day, pay tribute to the men and women who served the nation by celebrating at one of Glen Cove’s many events.

  • , 28 Highland Road, Glen Cove – Bring your family down to on May 29 at 1 p.m. for this creative and entertaining event decorating the war monuments. The event is open to all ages.
  • , 22 Continental Place, Glen Cove – Join the folks over at the Glen Cove Moose Lodge for their annual Memorial Day Barbeque. Starting at 3 p.m. on May 29, the lodge will be serving up tasty BBQ dishes, other foods, beer and soda to the backdrop of live music, shuffleboard and pool. A 50/50 raffle will also be up for grabs. Members pay only $10 for admission and $12 for non-members. The event is open to the public.  For more information call 516-676-1851 or email lodge578@mooseunits.org.
  • , 40 Hill Street – This Memorial Day, experience the true life story of one of the highest ranked officers in the navy Rear Admiral Herman A. Shelanski as he shares his experiences as a Jewish Naval Officer. Shelanski will discuss how he maintained his Jewish identity through many activities such as dedicating a Holocaust Torah aboard one of his ships and participating in Israeli’s Independence Day, while serving in the Navy. He also be discussing a Congregation Tifereth Israel’s book club favorite “My Life as a Jew in the Military” written by Jerry Wolkowitz, a young Jewish soldier in WWII as he recounts how Jewish soldiers during the 1940’s were transformed by their military experiences. The event is open to the public and is free of charge and will begin on May 29 at 10:15 a.m. A light breakfast will also be served.  
  • , 1 North Lane – Join the parade on Memorial day as residents walk through the streets of Glen Cove on Monday. Commemorations will begin at 11 a.m at Monument Park (between North Lane and School Street.) The parade starts at noon.
  •  , 90 School Street – All that parading around is bound to make you hungry, so stop by Page One Restaurant after the parade for their special Memorial Day party. The chefs will be preparing a special menu featuring their finest dishes, drinks and treats. The restaurant will be open for seating immediately after the parade at 1 p.m.
