Glen Cove residents tried their luck in the annual Mayor's Snapper Derby at Pryibil Beach Pier Saturday.

The annual  at  was the place to be Saturday, as Glen Cove families used their best fishing skills to compete for top honors and prizes. The snappers were plentiful with over 120 fish reeled in.

Although the event was  due to Tropical Storm Irene, it did not deter Glen Cove residents from attending. There were 85 registered kids, with ages ranging from 6-10 in the Junior Division, and 11-16 in the Senior Division. Fishing began at 1 p.m., and ended at 3 p.m. Raffles and refreshments followed.

"It's great what they do for the kids," said resident Edgard Rocca. "They really enjoy all this."

One Snapper Derby volunteer felt the event had been more than worthwhile.

"I had an amazing day," he said. "I taught two kids how to fish, that's a good day in my book."
