SCO Golf Tournament Draws Huge Turnout

Glen Cove nonprofit helps vulnerable New Yorkers build a strong foundation for the future.

Over 200 golfers attended Monday's SCO Family of Services Memorial Golf Open Monday at The Creek in Locust Valley.

Golf was followed by cocktails and dinner, a live auction at The Creek Beach House in Locust Valley and remarks by a successful graduate of one of SCO’s transfer schools in New York City for teens at risking of dropping out of high school. Students from SCO’s Robert J. McMahon Children’s Center in Sea Cliff also performed. The event was chaired by Thomas J. Fanning Sr., Dennis Hackett, Douglas Schloss, H. Craig Treiber and Stephen Tyree.

“We come together from many diverse interests and backgrounds in the common cause of helping 60,000 of New York’s most vulnerable children, teens, adults and families,” said Executive Director Gail B. Nayowith. “We share the belief that every single person deserves the best possible chance to live a safe, stable and productive life – and to reach their fullest potential.”

Chris Volpe, a sophomore at Hunter College, said “life felt irreparable and out of control” when he stopped attending high school. At North Queens Community High School, “SCO Family of Services provided me with unconditional support and an environment where I could thrive after realizing my mistakes. I am and will forever be grateful to the people who never gave up on me, even after I had given up on myself."

The golf event is named in memory of Howard F. Treiber, former Chairman of the Treiber Group LLC, one of the largest independent insurance and brokerage agencies in the US. Mr. Treiber served as Chairman of SCO’s Board of Directors from 1987 to 1996.  Since 1989, the Golf Open has raised over $4 million to help SCO Family of Services provide unconditional care to more than 60,000 people each year at over 115 locations throughout New York City and Long Island.
