Town Memorial Day Weekend Guide

Events and information you need for the holiday weekend.

It's a day to pause remember those who gave their lives in defense of our country and for many it's also the unofficial start of the summer season. Despite an ominous weather forecast there's plenty of events on tap. Here's a guide to make the most of the weekend.

Monday Parades:

Oyster Bay: Parade starts at 10:30 a.m. on South Street. It proceeds to Main Street and Audrey Avenue. It will be followed by an 11:45 a.m. service at the    Derby-Hall Bandstand on Audrey Avenue. 

Glen Cove: 
There will be an 11 a.m. commemoration at Monument Park at North Lane and School Street. The parade starts at noon at Cottage Row and Forest Avenue. It proceeds down School Street to Glen Street, turning on Pulaski Street and at the arterial highway, passing the reviewing stand at the Glen Cove Library and ending at Charles Street.

Plainview: This parade kicks off at 9:30 a.m.  at Old Country Road and Pasadena Drive. It proceeds to Manetto Hill Road and Washington Avenue ending at Plainview Old Bethpage Community Park. There will be a ceremony at the park afterwards.

Farmingdale: The Village  parade steps off at 10 a.m. It will travel down Main Street with a grandstand in front of Village Hall.

Syosset: The 10 a.m. parade starts at 10 a.m. It proceeds down Jackson Avenue and is followed by a service at Memorial Garden at Underhill Road and Jackson Avenue.

Massapequa: The parade begins at 10 a.m. on Front Street in Massapequa Park, travels west on Front Street to Park Boulevard, north on Park Boulevard to Clark Boulevard, west on Clark Boulevard to Broadway, south on Broadway to Klestinec Park in Massapequa, where a memorial service and wreath laying ceremony will take place.

Other Commemorations: On Saturday morning, numerous local scout troops and other volunteers will take part in flag planting at Long Island National Cemetery in Farmingdale between 6 a.m. and noon.

Veterans in Glen Cove will decorate war monuments on Sunday at the following times: 1 p.m. t the monument at Forst Street and Forest Avenue; 1:30 p.m. at the St. Rocco's Church monument  and 2 p.m at the monument on the corner of Elm Avenue and Frost Pond Road

Government Offices: Memorial Day is a federal state and local holiday. Government offices will be closed Monday, including Town Hall. There will be no mail delivery Monday.

Sanitation: There will be no Sanitation and S.O.R.T. Recycling collection on Monday. Those who normally receive sanitation pickup on Monday will receive it Tuesday. Tuesday collection will be made Wednesday.

LIRR: On Friday afternoon the Long Island Rail Road will add extra trains headed east on the Port Jefferson, Babylon, Port Washington Far Rockaway Montauk and Ronkonkoma Branches. The LIRR will run special trains and bus connections to Calverton National Cemetery Saturday. The Rail Road will operate on a Sunday schedule on Memorial Day.

Beaches and Parks: Tobay Beach, Philip B. Healey Beach, and Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Beach will be open for weekends only beginning Saturday. All state arks including Jones Beach, Robert Moses and Bethpage State Park will be open, although there may be some reduced parking and repair work at some parks. THe Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center in Bethpage will be closed.
