Two Civil Rights Leaders to Be Honored in MLK Day Celebration

Nelson Mandela tribute planned for 30th annual Glen Cove Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration.

The City of Glen Cove Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Birthday Commission and the Glen Cove School District will hold their 30th annual observance of Dr. King’s birthday on Jan. 20, 2014. 

The theme for this year’s event is “Glen Cove: Keeping the Dream Alive for 30 Years!” For three decades, the City of Glen Cove has a proud tradition of honoring Dr. King’s historic accomplishments on behalf of civil rights and the needs of the poor.

The day’s events begin at 8:45 a.m. with the traditional march from the First Baptist Church on Continental Place continuing through downtown Glen Cove and ending at the Finley Middle School Wunsch Arts Center on Forest Avenue.

At 10 a.m. the Commission has scheduled a wonderful program which includes a tribute to the late Nelson Mandela, a performance by the high school drumline, and musical selections offered by the Glen Cove High School Select Chorale.

Everyone is invited to participate in the march and to attend the program.
