Morgan Park Summer Festival Adds Saturday Performance

Festival will feature Music of Italy and U.S. Navy Band.

Entertainment at Morgan Park will run on back-to-back nights, this weekend, first with an added Saturday performance of the Italian melodies by L'Associazione Culturale Italiana di New York (ACINY); then the swinging brass-based music of the Northeast Navy Showband on Sunday.

Both concerts are part of the Morgan Park Summer Music Festival, scheduled for consecutive Sundays, and select Saturdays, until Aug. 29.

Residents, friends and family can add a touch of lush Italian melodies to top off una bella notte under Saturday night skies with ACINY, whose acclaimed concerts, under the baton of Music Director Giuseppe Nastasi, feature Italian and Italian-American artists performing contemporary and classical works.

This will be the debut Morgan Park concert for ACINY, a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing the appreciation and preservation of Italian culture through the presentation of concerts and other events.

This Sunday will feature a concert by The Northeast Navy Showband, based in Newport, Rhode Island.  Navy bands have always been an integral part of the naval presence in Newport, dating back to the Civil War period. The Northeast Navy Showband is one of the most sought-after big bands in the region, performing a variety of musical styles from straight-ahead swing to funky contemporary sounds to brassy patriotic songs. The ensemble travels extensively throughout the northeastern U.S., giving public concerts, music clinics, and performing at various music festivals.

The U.S. Navy has an extensive music program that includes 11 active duty fleet bands and two premier bands, all featuring professional musicians from around the nation.  Each band operates within its own geographic area of responsibility, representing the U.S. Navy around the world.

Concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. in the park, which sits between Landing Road and Germaine Street. Residents are encouraged to bring chairs, blankets and picnic baskets. In case of inclement weather, the concerts will be held at St. Patrick's Parish Hall on Pearsall Avenue.
