Motown Sounds Hits Downtown

Dr. K's Motown Revue takes the stage at the Village Square

The Four Tops, Marvin Gaye, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Martha and the Vandellas, the Supremes: for so many of us those magically melodic names are now synonymous with turning Motor City Detroit into Motown America.

Although their chart-topping exploits may have been largely confined to the ‘60s, their music lives on and Glen Cove will be the beneficiary at this Friday night’s , when Dr. K’s Motown Revue takes the stage at the Village Square.

While presenting a set list that includes all of the above, the group will also add a song in tribute to Michael Jackson, according to the Paul Korman, the visionary leader whose Revue is the result of a quest to create the ultimate Motown tribute band.

“We’ve put together an amazing array of seasoned musicians and singers that I’ve either played with or wanted to play with over the years,” Korman said. “Our show consists of Motown hits from 1961 to 1969. We also have narration after certain songs, giving the current events of that year when the song was popular.  This brings people right back to the past and is educational to people who did not grow up in that era.”

How good is the ensemble at recreating that sense of nostalgia for Motown?

“Dr. K’s Motown Revue is a perfect throwback to great times in American roots music,” Beth Davis, of Streaming Music Network.

“Dr. K’s Motown Revue is the most authentic Motown band since the original Funk Bros,” said Alan Slutsky, whose movie “Standing In The Shadows of Motown,” chronicles the Detroit sound and its impact on American roots music.

While the Revue has played venues as impressive as BB King’s Blues Club & Grill in Manhattan and the Mohegan Sun Resort and Casino in Connecticut, when they play Glen Cove, the Revue is on its home field.

“It will be a real treat for the band to be performing locally, Korman said. “In addition, our keyboard player, Clayton Johnson has been a resident of Glen Cove for 50 yrs and still lives in Glen Cove.”

The Downtown Sounds concert series is a collaboration between the Glen Cove Downtown Business Improvement District (BID) – the program’s organizer – the City of Glen Cove and a number of sponsors.  The concerts in the heart of town at the Village Square are free. Performances begin at 7:30 p.m.
