Music for Mother's Day

The Long Island Youth Orchestra will an afternoon of orchestral music at Tilles Center on May 11.

The Long Island Youth Orchestra, featuring musicians from across the region, is presenting a Mother's Day concert Sunday, May 11, 2 p.m. at Tilles Center for the Performing Arts – LIU Post in Brookville.

In residence at LIU Post, the orchestra rehearses weekly and presents a series of four concerts each season, including an afternoon concert each year on Mother's Day. The orchestra consists of nearly 100 student musicians from as many as 40 communities.

On Mother's Day, Scott Dunn, music director and conductor of the Long Island Youth Orchestra, will conduct LIYO in an afternoon of orchestral music.  This year marks the 52nd season of LIYO, which was founded by Martin Dreiwitz in 1962.

The concert will feature a performance of the Gustav Holst’s famous orchestral suite “The Planets,” which was composed between 1914 and 1916. The orchestral members of LIYO selected “The Planets” to be their “orchestral choice” of the season and will perform four movements of the work – Mars, Venus, Mercury and Jupiter.  This popular orchestral work will highlight the concert, which also includes Mozart’s Overture to Magic Flute composed in Mozart’s last year (1791) and Hugo Alfven’s Swedish Rhapsody No. 1.

Tickets priced at $15 for adults and $10 for students/seniors will be available one hour prior to the concert in the lobby of Tilles Center.  To reserve tickets in advance, e-mail LongIslandYouthOrchestra@gmail.com. For further information call (516) 299.3174, or visit the orchestra’s website at www.liyo.org
