Video: Garvies Point Museum Unveils New Exhibit

Garvies Point Museum unveils a new Woodland Village exhibit for the children of Nassau County and Long Island.

Long Island children now have the opportunity to travel back to a time before industrialization, to the heart of Native American history; and they can do it right here in Glen Cove.

Officials – including Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano – cut the ribbon on The Woodland Village, a new interactive children’s exhibit at Saturday afternoon.

Children explored the life of the Native Americans by cooking over a fire, gathering food and building a shelter.

“This exhibit would be for pre-k to third grade, and we hope to correlate this exhibit with educational programs on indigenous groups,” said museum assistant site director Dolores Contreras.

Glen Cove Mayor Ralph Suozzi said that the exhibit will play a crucial role in the education of local children.

“I think this exhibit is great not only for Glen Cove, but all of Nassau County and all of Long Island because it shows where we came from. It preserves our history," Suozzi said. "Kids can’t learn this later in life they have to learn it now when they’re small.”
