'Young Person's Guide to The Orchestra' Comes to Tilles

November family concert will also feature Giuseppe Verdi and Morton Gould.

Long Island children and parents alike will get a taste of classical music with the Long Island Youth Orchestra’s Nov. 24 concert at Tilles Center in Brookville. The performance will  feature Benjamin Britten’s  popular “Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra,” which highlights every section of the orchestra. Also on the program is music for fans of jazz and Giuseppe Verdi.

Narrating the Britten is native Long Islander Joseph Rutkowski, who is currently the Director of Instrumental Music at Great Neck North High School.  The program will also include Morton Gould’s Symphonette No. 2 “American.” A well-known American composer, Gould was a long-time resident of Great Neck. The concert will open with Giuseppe Verdi ‘s Overture to “Nabucco,” tying in with the 200th anniversary of Verdi’s birth in 1813.

The performance marks the season opener for LIYO,  which is now in its 52nd year. The orchestra is in residence at LIU Post in Brookville, and features approximately 100 teens from nearly 40 Long Island communities. Founded by Martin Dreiwitz in 1961, the orchestra is now led by Scott Dunn, who serves as both music director and conductor. The orchestra performs four concerts each season.
