Man Arrested In Alleged Attempted Child Abduction

Glen Cove man charged with harassment and child endangerment.

Umberto Stanco, 79, of Glen Cove was arrested Tuesday night in connection with an attempted child abduction.

Stanco allegedly tried to lure a 15 year old girl into his truck late Monday afternoon while she was walking along School Street.

Glen Cove police identified the man's truck in an unspecified local neighborhood using a city surveillance camera photo.

“The surveillance cameras in the downtown area played a major role in bringing a quick arrest to this case," said Lt. Det. John Nagle.

The downtown cameras were installed through a Federal Grant at no cost to the city’s tax payers. The cameras went online last April and feed directly into the Glen Cove police Department.

Stanco was arrested and charged with Endangering the Welfare of a Child and Harassment 2nd degree. He will be arraigned in Glen Cove Court tomorrow.
