Anthony's Casual Dining Goes Under

Restaurant displays "Closed" sign four months after opening.

If you've passed Anthony's Casual Dining in the past week, you might have noticed the yellow "For Sale" signs in the darkened windows and the "Closed" sign on the front door.

The place appears to be done for, along with the adjacent Anthony's Pizzeria, which is owned by the same couple, Michael and Helen Hoffman.

Glen Cove Chamber of Commerce executive director Phyllis Gorham said Tuesday she had not heard about a closing from the owners, who she said live upstate, but that last week someone told her the signs were posted.

The Hoffman's were not immediately reached for comment, and the restaurant's phone appeared to be disconnected as of a call placed Tuesday afternoon. Its Facebook page was last updated on Sept. 18 with an appeal for support:

"We have truly been blessed with a wonderful chef, who is also an amazing person. He took a chance and left a secure position, in a quality restaurant to be with us. Our customers come back again and again. Unfortunately, we do not have nearly enough customers to afford to stay open for much longer. We are reaching out to our friends in Glen Cove to tell their friends to please come and try us out. We love Glen Cove and want to be here for many years, but without some help from the people who have been supporting us, we may not be here for many days more. Please spread the word so we can continue to be here for you, as you have been here for us. Thanks, Mike and Helen."

The restaurant opened in late May and had its grand opening June 15.
