Gas Prices Drop on Long Island

Each gallon of gas costs, on average, about 8 cents more in New York City.

Gas prices slid to $3.518 a gallon this week on Long Island, a drop of 8 cents from the same period a month ago, according to statistics compiled by the AAA.

The $3.518 a gallon of unleaded gasoline was considerably less than the $4.121 each gallon cost a year ago, after Sandy slammed Long Island.

The lower prices won't last, if one analyst's prediction is correct. Andy Lipow of a Houston-based consulting firm told Newsday he expected an increase of up to 10 cents over the next couple weeks.

Of all the New York markets tracked by the AAA, Syracuse had the lowest prices, at $3.45. New York City had the highest gas prices, at $3.596.
