UPDATED: Glen Cove Golf Course Restaurant to Reopen

Soundview under new management; city optimistic, but doubts exist about viability.

Editor's Note: The opening was delayed indefinitely subsequent to this article's publication for reasons unrelated to the business. The City is projecting a full opening sometime in late May, but said limited food and drinks will be offered in the meantime. Check Patch for an update next week.

The new operator of the Soundview at the Glen Cove Golf Course has restaurant experience that has some in the city optimistic about the place's future after its expected reopening May 1.

“The primary focus is for the golfers, and to create a good experience,” said Mayor Ralph Suozzi. “We want to create a country club atmosphere on a public course.”

The mayor called the restaurant a “turnkey operation;” the building is city-owned but the restaurant will be run by Chris Mantzariss, owner of Americana Kafe and Grill in Hicksville. He also has experience running a concessions operation in New Jersey.

Mantzariss did not return calls for comment.

Suozzi said the proposed menu includes entrees priced at less than $20, and said the City recommended diverse choices like seafood. He wants to see the golf course and restaurant have synergy, possibly offering promotional deals that sync with golfers’ game play.

The restaurant was known as the Tiffany House for more than two decades before it was taken over by new owners and was renamed Soundview in 2004 when the contract was reassigned. That operator left in 2009 and was replaced by the previous operator who was recently evicted by the city when he stopped paying rent. The rent is $6,000 per month plus utilities.

Councilman Reginald Spinello was skeptical about the business's prospects at the City Council's April 8 meeting.

“The Soundview isn’t what it used to be years ago, and I certainly wish these people well, but I think that they have a long road in front of them,” Spinello said.

Spinello said if it doesn’t work this time, the city should reconsider its formula for renting the property.

Historically, the golf course has been a significant revenue producer for the city, according to Suozzi.
