GLYHOP Celebrates Second Year

Restaurant offers natural breakfast dishes and more to Glen Cove residents.

On the corner of Glen Cove Street at Butler Street sits a fully restored architectural gem that maintains Glen Cove's charm and historical integrity.

The building was relocated to its current location on Glen Street in 1810. This year marks its 200th Anniversary from its beginnings as the J. H. Coles Homestead and then as The Coles Restaurant. This month marks the second year of business as it is now known, the seemingly popular, GLYHOP Restaurant, which is under the ownership of the Holden family.

"When you come here, you feel like you are upstate, somewhere else; it's like a little hideaway here in Glen Cove," said Peter Holden. "People love the atmosphere; it's casual, family-oriented."

Best known for its breakfast menu, particularly the wholesome and natural pancakes, GLYHOP also serves other usual fare like organic eggs and hot oatmeal. Lunch is also served daily, but dinner is prepared special on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays only.

"We try to be 75 percent organic and we are nearly all natural, we don't use any preservatives, chemicals or taste enhancers; you are going to taste the real flavor of your food," said Holden. "We always have enough free range eggs and meat without hormones, so the public eats healthy."

The owners have two other local businesses, the GLY Religious Books and Gifts, which opened in 2002, and the GLY Café, which serves baked goods made in the GLYHOP kitchen. The business name "GLY" represents the family's religious foundation, the initials for "God Loves You."

Menus are viewable on the restaurant's Web site and delivery is locally available. In addition to dining in, GLYHOP accommodates children's parties, business meetings and catered events. Outdoor patio seating is seasonal and weekend happy hour is from 3 to 5 p.m.

Although it is closed on Mondays, the regular hours are Tuesday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Friday through Sunday from 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
