LI Ducks Player Opens Retail Shop

Ray “Digmi” Navarrete, now in his eighth season playing for the Long Island Ducks, has accomplished the dream of playing professional baseball. So, it stands to reason, this Port Washington resident has a shot at making it in the major leagues when it comes to going national with his clothing brand, too.

Now, Navarrete is one step closer to achieving his retail dreams, with his shop Digmi (pronounced “Dig Me”) in Port Washington. Harkening the layout and feel of an urban loft, the store features casual streetwear – T-shirts, sweatshirts and hats – sporting custom-design Digmi graphics. The shop opened just in time for the December holiday shopping season.

Ultimately, Navarrete hopes the shop can also become a specialty boutique sneaker store, carrying limited editions from the likes of Nike, New Balance and Vans, which would draw consumers from across the region.

NUMC to Start New Program For Low-Income Families

Nassau University Medical Center will start a new program called Health Leads, which will allow doctors to "prescribe" basic resources such as food, heat, child care and transportation to low-income families.

Highly trained students from Hofstra University will serve as advocates who will connect patients to resources like food banks, utility assistance, legal assistance, child care and early intervention programs for children.

Bethpage FCU Says Air Show Will Go On

Official at the Bethpage Federal Credit Union say the federal government's sequestration budget cuts won't stop its famed air show at Jones Beach in May.

The budget cuts could impact all aspects of the U.S. Military’s participation in air shows across the country beginning April 1, 2013, including teams scheduled to perform at this year's Memorial Day weekend show at Jones Beach.

But Bethpage officials announced that the show 10th anniversary show will go on with a world class lineup of civilian performers as well as a second- time appearance by the Royal Canadian Air Force Supersonic F18 Demo Team.

Performances by the Geico Skytypers, John Klatt, David Windmiller, the Warbirds and Sean Tucker among many others will wow audiences with their fast paced maneuvers and unique capabilities, Bethpage organizers say.

Hess to Quit Retail Gas Station Business

Hess Corp. announced Monday in a letter to shareholders that it plans to exit its retail gasoline and convenience store operations, a move that could erase the iconic green and white Hess Station signs from the Long Island landscape.

The move will affect 1,350 gas stations - many owned by Hess itself - that operate in 18 states on the Eastern Seaboard. The gas stations serve as many as 1.3 million customers a day, according to a report in Supermarket News.

Hess did not say when they would begin either closing or selling off their gas stations, although a statement accompanying the news said that the gas station closures, along with other moves to improve the company's bottom line, would begin between now and 2014.
