North Shore-LIJ CEO Named Among 'Most Influential'

Michael J. Dowling is one of the most powerful professionals in his field, according to Modern Healthcare magazine.

North Shore-LIJ Hospital has something to brag about—other than saving lives.

It’s president and CEO, Michael J. Dowling, recently ranked 38th in Modern Healthcare magazine’s, ”100 Most Powerful People in Healthcare,” list.

This is Dowling’s sixth consecutive list in the ranking. This year, he was the only New York area healthcare CEO to make the top 100.

The top healthcare players on the list were Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts, Aetna President Mark Bertolini, Oregon Governor Dr. John Kitzhaber and President Barack Obama.

Perhaps one reason for reaching such heights is the size of the system he overseas. North Shore-LIJ is the third-largest non-profit and secular healthcare system in the country. It comprises 16 hospitals in Long Island and New York City, 20 long-term care centers, five home health agencies, The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research, three trauma centers, the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine and dozens of other facilities.

Dowling has been at North Shore-LIJ’s since1995, and was made president and CEO in 2002. Previous to joining North Shore-LIJ, he was the state’s director of Health, Education and Human Services and deputy secretary to New York’s governor, as well as the state’s commissioner of Social Services.
