Officials Talk Progress On 'Garvies Point'

It's been at least a decade since the newly named "Garvies Point" revitalization program began, and on Wednesday, officials said they welcome the chance to "reintroduce" the waterfront to not only Glen Cove residents but also their North Shore neighbors.

The billion dollar 52-acre waterfront project will see construction beginning in the the fall of 2014, said Scott Rechler, the chairman and CEO of RXR Realty, the property's developer.

And with work completed by the City of Glen Cove, RXR and partners at the county, state and federal levels, new access to the waterfront will be celebrated at the first Sea Faire. Slated for July 6-7, the Sea Faire will feature fireworks by Grucci, rides on The Christeen, a historic sloop built in Glen Cove in 1880, rides, food, music and more. Sponsored by RXR, the City of Glen Cove and Glen Cove's CDA/IDA, the event's proceeds will benefit the Glen Cove Youth Bureau.

"Our waterfront today is more accessible than it's been in my lifetime," Mayor Ralph Suozzi said. "We are transitioning from our industrial past to our revitalized waterfront redevelopment area. It's a great natural resource."

Renaming the site "Garvies Point" is a nod to the city's history. Dr. Thomas Garvie was a physician and entrepreneur who moved to the area in the 1800s from Scotland. His home was on the property marked for the new development.  Garvies Point Preserve comprises the former Garvie estate.
