Stango's Ownership Changing After 94 Years

Family-owned establishment has served Glen Cove through generations; new owners to reopen in 2013.

After nearly a century under the guidance of one bloodline, Stango's Restaurant will be changing hands. The Italian eatery, owned and operated by the same family since 1919, will serve its last meal on Sunday before the new owners take over.

The announcement was made Wednesday morning on the restaurant's Facebook page:

"The Stango/Cocchiola family has kept Stango's Restaurant operating on the same corner in Glen Cove for about ninety-four years. We've finally decided that it's time to step away. Our last night at the Restaurant will be this coming Sunday, November 25. New owners will be opening at the same spot some time soon, possibly this Spring. There were a lot of marriage proposals in that restaurant, even a few breakups, there were rehearsal dinners, veterans returning from too many wars broke bread with their families at Stango's, there are countless stories and memories. There are more to come. Thank you for ninety-four great years, it's been an honor and we wouldn't have spent them any other way. We'll miss you all."

The restaurant's owners were not immediately available for comment. Stay tuned for more on this development.

It's not closing permanently Micah, it will reopen in the Spring, with new ownership.

Where will we find our Pork Chops and vinagar
peppers? I hope the new owners keep it a family style moderate priced restaurant. Sad to see a family run establishment gone.

It is a Glen Cove institution and it will be missed. It is a true family restaurant and oneof my favorites. Even if it reopens, it will not be the same without Stella and the rest of the family.

When I said "step away", I didn't mean that the Cocchiola/Stango family are leaving completely. The restaurant is not closing down, the new owners will be keeping the old recipes and traditions alive, while adding new ideas and energy. We're very happy they're willing to carry the torch and will be sure to help in any way we can. We're confident Stango's will be better than ever, and members of our family will still be on hand. Stella will still be coming in, but at ninety-six years old, will hopefully take a few more nights off. We're looking forward to the transition.

Best wishes to you all. Unfortunately, I haven't been there in a few years "Mama" Stella, her family, staff and local customers were always, delightful friendly faces to see. My favorite dish was the shrimp parmesan!

A taco joint would kill over there......Is the bowling alley still there??? Overall the orchard is just a depressing place.....Hard place to deal with

I agree, the Orchard is not the most attractive area in Glen Cove but how has the restaurant lasted so long?
It must be the owners, will the new owners be as fortunate in the present economy? We wish them good luck.
