Sweet Passion is a self-serve frozen yogurt shop that is bringing the trend to southern Glen Cove.
The store was the brainchild of Mena Tortorella and Slavko Markovic. Tortorella worked for Markovic at his restaurant, Nitalis Grill.
They moved into the Verizon store that was up for rent in the same shopping center as Markovic's restaurant. The remodeling process started in March, and four months later Sweet Passion opened for business July 7.
“So far it’s been going really well,” Tortorella said. “We haven’t had any advertising really, it’s mostly word of mouth.”
What keeps their customers coming back are the healthy options and the flavors, she said.
“We felt the town kind of lacked something like this,” she said. “And what’s better than frozen yogurt? It’s better for you and healthier than ice cream.”
The store offers toppings like fruits and nuts, and non-frozen-yogurt options like fruit smoothies.
A changing roster of flavors is another of Sweet Passion's selling points.

“They’re constantly switching,” Tortorella said. “The only ones that don’t change are the chocolate and vanilla and the Euro tart.”
Euro tart is the original frozen yogurt, she explained.
Favorite flavors at the store include vanilla, cookies and cream and cake batter. The reception Sweet Passion has gotten has given the owners hope for a bright future in Glen Cove.
“We’re still really new, but we’re feeling good,” Tortorella said
