YMCA Makes Healthy Living More Accessible During Diabetes Awareness Month

The YMCA of Long Island today announced that it will be offering new memberships for a reduced joiner’s fee of $1.00 (a $75 value) through the month of November, which is nationally recognized as “Diabetes Awareness Month.”  New members will have access to the Y’s “You Can Take Control” Diabetes Prevention Program that helps people who are at risk of developing Type-2 Diabetes adopt and maintain healthy lifestyles by eating nutritious foods and increasing physical activity.  In addition, every dollar from new memberships will go directly to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

“About 79 million people in the US have been diagnosed with Pre-Diabetes, putting them at great risk of developing Type-2 Diabetes,” said Tina Graziose, regional coordinator of the YMCA of Long Island’s YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program.  “But the disease can be avoided or delayed by making healthier life choices.  At the Y, we work diligently to provide nutrition, lifestyle and exercise programs to help Long Islanders win the fight against Type-2 Diabetes.”

The YMCA of Long Island’s Diabetes Prevention Program, occurs several times a year at our various branches. The program consists of 16 one-hour sessions with a trained lifestyle coach who teaches participants about incorporating a healthy diet, physical activity and other behavioral changes in their daily lives. The program includes ongoing guidance and positive reinforcement, as well as a follow up period to help people stay on track.
