Guns in schools

Recent and current discussions are going on around the county about gun control and much of is has focused on school safety as well. It used to be fine years ago, what has changed.

People forget the days back in the '70s when Glen Cove High School had armed police officers and later armed security guards in the hallways of the schools during time of social unrest.  These days it's not about fights in the hallways, but outsiders coming into our schools around the country to do harm to students and teachers where they know little or no resistance will meet them.  Many schools are moving toward armed "security resource officers" in the, not only for protection of the student and faculty, but to help build a better bond with the young people as well and stop something from happening that without might have grave effects later.Few in Glen Cove may remember that GCHS has for years had a rifle range in the basement (near the elevator by the front office) for a long ago student rifle team, which visited other schools in Nassau county with similar ranges in their basements for shooting competition.  Long are those days when a school would openly have a shooting team, much less a range in the school with rifles in a school bus.  However, during those years, there was never a problem with guns. In those days, the club taught student club members to be responsible and all of them ended up that way that way inei careers. One became a GC Police Officer as well for many years.Lets look at keeping our kids safe but not at the cost of taking guns away from law abiding people and teach our kids to be responsible.
