COLUMN - From the Desk of Delia DeRiggi-Whitton

A New Year, A New District, Good News

First, as I have concluded my first term and begun my second, I’d like to thank all of you who first voted for me to become your Nassau County Legislator two years ago and now all of you who have voted to re-elect me.

It has been a pleasure and honor to serve you so far and I am grateful for the chance to continue the important work we have been doing together.

My new district, the 11th LD, incorporates Sands Point, Port Washington, Flower Hill, Roslyn, Roslyn Harbor, Glen Head, Glenwood, Sea Cliff and Glen Cove.

I am happy to report that throughout the new district, there are several positive developments.

In the Port Washington area, I met at Elderfields recently. The county property, which hosts the Art Guild, has been in limbo after hurricane Irene and a subsequent fire. I am exploring how to help the Art Guild make the most of this historic building because I believe their plans for the site can benefit the community in many ways.

Also in Port Washington, my esteemed predecessor, Wayne Wink helped secure a grant from the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation to improve Stannards Brook Park, which is a county property. I am happy to be involved in this process as the work unfolds.

In the Glen Cove area, we Legislators recently approved funding for a Glen Cove sewage treatment plant blower that should alleviate the odor some residents have complained about. I had previously hosted a representative from the Shore Road group in my office and discussed this matter. So is welcome news. I’ll keep you updated.

It was also a pleasure to approve an $815,000 revolving loan grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for waterfront cleanup. The funds will be used to finish cleaning up the “Doxey site.” After so many years and so much work advancing the waterfront effort, I am glad to be able to help the city take another step forward.

In Sea Cliff, the Village has done extensive grant applications and planning to revitalize Scudders Pond. You can see the trucks there now doing the work, which will make for a cleaner and more enjoyable recreation area. I have submitted a request to contribute financially to this effort using the Nassau County Community Revitalization Program. Sea Cliff’s project deserves our support.

In general, it is a pleasure meeting many of you in the new parts of my district and throughout the entire 11th LD, I want to hear your needs and concerns, so please feel free to contact me: 571-6211 or DDeRiggiWhitton@NassauCountyNY.gov or www.facebook.com/LegislatorDeliaDeRiggiWhitton.
