Reaching Out to Seniors

Celebrating Six Years Honoring Our Seniors

Legislator Delia DeRiggi-Whitton wishes to remind local seniors that her office is focused on their needs. She is inviting any seniors to call her office at 571-6218 or email DDeRiggiWhitton@NassauCountyNY.com if they need assistance.

Delia has been responsible for many senior programs and events since her years on the Glen Cove City Council, when she was the council’s Senior Liaison. At the Glen Cove Senior Center and Sea Cliff Village Hall, she has co-hosted events like Smart Seniors, an Attorney General program that shares important tips on avoiding scams.

The beloved Rose Ceremony was also started by Delia, which is held every month at Glen Cove Senior Center, where residents from Sea Cliff, Glen Head and of course Glen Cove come for activities. Each month, for six years, Delia has bought roses for each senior’s birthday. Her favorite part, she said is when they share their lesson on how to live a long happy life.

At the most recent Rose Ceremony, Delia and the seniors were thrilled that Congressman Steve Israel came to meet seniors and even participated handing out roses.

“I wanted our seniors to know that the community respects and appreciate them,” Delia shared about creating the Rose Ceremony. “It is nice to take home a special gift, so I thought roses would be good. I do love hearing their stories. And, now, they come prepared with a speech, so I am glad to see they love it too!”
