Bites Nearby: Jo Jo Apples

This new restaurant, located in the historic Coles House, offers complete dinners at a cost almost too reasonable to pass up.

You could stand on a corner and look around until a restaurant sign draws you in. But we've got a better idea. Each week, Glen Cove Patch picks a great restaurant either in town or nearby that is worth checking out. Here's this week's choice:

Jo Jo Apples, which made its debut in February – its second location – boasts terrific, reasonably-priced American cuisine the family will have no choice but to love.

There is no greater setting for this new, charming restaurant than the historic Coles House. Built in 1810, it's a landmark home previously inhabited by J.H. Coles, a direct descendant of Robert Coles, the founder of Glen Cove.

Original wooden floors, fireplaces, chandeliers and candlelit tables allow customers to feel warm and cozy. Different rooms and dining areas also provide for a more quiet and intimate vibe.

The food is as pleasant as the surroundings. Bread is served warm upon being seated by accommodating staff.

The fried calamari appetizer is a must-have.

It was pleasing to see entree portions slightly on the large side; every one tried was flavorful and nicely-presented.

The biggest surprise? The check. Complete dinners, which begin at $13.95, include soup or salad, entree, potato, vegetable and dessert.

Jo Jo Apples is also open for breakfast and lunch. Professional catering services are available.

Free lot is in back of building, off of Butler Street.

149 Glen St. 516-277-2023. Open daily 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Prices: $10 to $20 for entrees, price-fixed complete dinners start at $13.95.
