Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club Holds Career Day

Children learned about careers in several different fields at the Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club "Career Fair" in November.

The held "Career Day" last week, an opportunity for nearly 40 of Glen Cove's future professionals to ask questions about careers and learn about different fields.

The event was attended by representatives from the Marines, media and publicity, cosmetology, law and education. The event's keynote speaker, Helisse Palmore, principal of Barack Obama Elementary School in Hempstead, stressed the importance of education at the early elementary ages.

"I think it's important to expose kids as early as possible," she said. "A solid foundation in education is a passport to go into any area they choose."

Also in attendance was Kathy Isoldi, Assistant Professor of Nutrition at Long Island University, C.W. Post Campus, who hosts "Cooking Up Energy," a program at the Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club that teaches about healthy lifestyles.

"They need a vision for where they want to be in the future," said Isoldi. "It's a crucial step, so they know they have a goal, and to get started with good grades, and disclipine to achieve."

Sensei Hender Alvarado of in Glen Cove, a world-class karate practitioner, shared his own experiences.

"I was lucky because I found my passion at a young age," he said. "I'm proof that even with a hobby, just something you like to do, you can do it as your own career and find success if you work hard enough at it."

said the Club hosts after school and summer programs focused on academic success, healthy lifestyles, character and citizenship.
