Changed by 9/11: Rob Germino, Marine

Motivated by the attacks, Glen Cove resident served in Iraq.

While stationed at at Army camp in Hit, Iraq (pronounced "Heat"), Glen Cove resident Robert Germino saw a pile of refuse and decided to take a photo near it. Germino said this best described the condition of this area--i.e., abysmal.

The Army unit was attached to Germino's Marine unit, Regimental Combat Team 2. Germino visited the Army unit as part of his work on Biometric Automated Toolset (a computer system used to track and defeat insurgents).

Germino said that while he did not personally know anyone who died on 9/11, the attack inspired him to enlist in the U.S. Marine Corps in 2003, after he finished college.

Germino said he also felt that he was following my grandfather's footsteps – who served in the European theater of World War II, defending the United States during a crisis.
