The Glen Cove Memorial Day parade Monday drew scores of families who came out to honor the memory of our fallen war heroes.

The parade route began on Forest Avenue, winded its way through School and Glen Streets, and concluded on Charles Street across from the .

The event was organized by the City of Glen Cove Memorial Day Parade Committee, whose members represent the VFW James Donahue Post 347, American Legion Post 76, American Legion Young-Simmons Post 1765 and the Marine Corps League Globe and Anchor Detachment.

Prior to the commencement of the parade was a ceremony in Monument Park (North Lane and School Street). Mayor Ralph Suozzi commended this year’s honoree, , presenting him with a plaque for his hard work, dedication and courage while serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Suozzi mentioned that although he, himself, had never served in the armed forces, he is appreciative of all they have done for our country.

“One of the best parts about being mayor is being so close to these veterans, and realizing what national treasures they are. I don’t know how these guys do it, but they’re the best,” Suozzi said.

The Glen Cove Police Department, local war veterans, Guest of Honor, Gold Star Mother, government officials and political figures - including Senator Carl Marcellino and Assemblyman Charles Lavine - led the parade through the downtown area, followed by the Glen Cove High School Kickline team and Cheerleading squad.

One Glen Cove mother was especially thrilled to be there.

“My son, Kevin, is marching with the Middle School band,” said Rosa Farfan. “It’s very fun and exciting to watch."

Glen Cove High School graduate and former parade participant, Anna Carmody, had more than one reason to celebrate the weekend’s main event.

“It’s a little more special this year,” said Carmody, whose current boyfriend is in the ROTC program at Rutgers University. “He’s probably in his uniform right now, marching in his own town’s parade.”

Carmody also came out to support her mother and siblings, who marched this year: “I love seeing the whole community come together and support every single group that is in the parade,” she said.

Resident and Iraq War veteran Robert Germino was this year's Grand Marshal.

"I thank the Glen Cove Memorial Day Parade Committee for selecting me to be the 2011 Grand Marshal," Germino said. "It was a true honor to march in the parade. I also thank the residents of Glen Cove, local veterans organizations, firefighters, police officers, business owners, and various community groups for supporting this event."
